Kirk Theatre 40th Anniversary

A little over forty four years ago, members of the Pickering Musical Society were looking for a new home, having previously performed in the town’s Memorial Hall. The search went on for several months before the old Methodist Chapel on Hungate was listed for sale.  After viewing this space, the members of the society realised that this old chapel could be just the building they were looking for. In 1979 the purchase was made, and then the monumental task of converting a chapel into a theatre began. Derek Brewer, the newly appointed theatre manager, led a team of volunteers who worked tirelessly on evenings and weekends to convert the building into what we see today. In September 1983 the theatre opened its doors to the public for an Opening Concert.  Forty years later the theatre is a thriving cultural beacon in the town; still owned and operated by Pickering Musical Society, and run by the generosity of volunteers. The conversion and hard work still continues, improving the facilities the theatre has to offer.
