War Stories: Armistice Special with Harp & a Monkey

To mark Armistice Weekend, the Kirk Theatre is delighted to announce a special performance by the award-winning song and storytelling trio Harp & a Monkey.

The popular multi-instrumentalists will perform their acclaimed ‘War Stories’ show, originally commissioned by the Arts Council and Western Front Association to mark the centenary of the First World War.

This special one-off performance will include recordings of people who lived through the Great War, traditional and original songs about lesser-known aspects of the conflict and humorous and poignant tales by band frontman and respected WW1 historian and author Martin Purdy. As ever with Harp & a Monkey, you can expect wonderful insights and melodies.

The band rarely perform this show in full, so this is a rare chance to see why it has garnered such huge critical acclaim – and why the Commonwealth War Graves Commission gets them to perform extracts of it every year in the largest war cemetery in Britain.

Here are just some of things to have been said about the ‘War Stories’ show…

“Bold and brilliant” (The Observer);

“Courageous, demanding and ultimately satisfying.” (FolkRadioUK);

“A unique and unmissable sonic monument.” (RootsWorld, USA);

“The most beautiful songs ever made on this theme.” (AltCountry, Germany);

“Excellent.” (The Guardian); “Brilliant.” (BBC Radio 2 Folk Show).
